The Royal Oak, 42-44 Woodstock Road, OX2 6HT. (01865 310187) 1 minute walk from Institute. Lots of nooks and crannies to sit in as well and great for a quiet drink or a group can take over a whole area. Good food.

Rose and Crown, 14 North Parade, Oxford OX2 6LX. (01865 510551) A short 10 minute walk from the institute. Extremely friendly pub, with a variety of excellent food.

The Trout Inn, Godstow Road, Oxford OX2 8PN. (01865 510930) Dates from the 12th century, and has huge oak beams and ancient fireplaces. Outdoor seating by the river Isis (Thames), frequented by swans and peacocks. Accessible by foot across Port Meadow (approx. 1hr from Oxford centre), or by car through Wolvercote from the Woodstock Road roundabout.

The Turf, 4-5 Bath Place, Oxford OX1 3SU. (01865 243235) Secluded location by the old city wall, down a narrow alley under the Bridge of Sighs, dates from the 13th century. Largest range of real ales anywhere in Oxford. Outdoor seating available. Heated outdoor seating available.

The Victoria Arms, Mill Lane, Old Marston OX3 0QA. (01865 241382) Accessible by car, through Marston Village, by foot up the river from University Parks (approx. 45 minutes from Oxford centre), or by punt from the Cherwell Boathouse (approx. 45 mins). Sit by the open fire in winter or in the garden by the river in nice weather.

Head of the River St Aldate’s, 40 Pembroke Square, Oxford OX1 4LB. (01865 721600) Situated on the banks of the River Isis (Thames) a short 10 minute walk from Oxford city centre. Heated outdoor seating available.
